Welcome to ISPL
Mission
ISPL, The London Institute of Space Policy and Law, is dedicated to the impartial study and development of space policies and related laws. Our aim is that these policies and laws should advance human interaction with outer space and its use for the betterment of life on Earth. We are focused on educating and informing both present and future policy makers and lawyers to lead the way to achieve that end.
Our approach is multi-disciplinary, informed by scientific, technical, economic and social factors. Our diverse international Faculty creates the environment to realise that objective.
We equip individuals and organisations with the tools to address the complex issues arising with the growth of the modern, thriving space sector.
Who We Are
ISPL is an independent registered charity, associated with the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, London University.
We bring together a faculty of leading academics, legal and policy professionals, scientists and engineers, political scientists and managers and others active in the space sector around the world. Together they offer a wealth of knowledge and experience in different cultural settings. ISPL also greatly benefits from the advice of world leaders in the sector, both on our Board of Directors and in our Board of Advisers.
ISPL has close links with the UN Office of Outer Space Affairs, space agencies and commercial enterprises, law firms and academic institutions around the world. We collaborate with many educational and research organisations.
What We Do
ISPL offers postgraduate degrees in space policy and space law. We examine the merits and consequences of alternative policy and legal options available to states active in space. We carry out other research in space policy and law topics, both independently and commissioned by international, government and private entities. We provide undergraduate courses and lectures, complete modules as part of courses taught at other institutions and practitioner seminars on topical subjects. In addition, we offer continuing professional development (CPD) seminars carrying credit for the Solicitors Regulatory Authority and the Bar Council, and intensive certificate courses on space-related topics.
ISPL also generates space policy and legal white papers, examining proposed or potential policies and laws. Our research reports, studies and background documents are available on-line.
